The big-screen adaptation of
Gayle Forman's renowned novel If I Stay
has hit the theaters worldwide (some a good while ago). Starring actress Chloë Grace Moretz (who is returning to the theaters in another YA adaptation in a year's time), If I Stay tells
the story of seventeen year-old Mia, caught in a limbo between life and death
following a tragic car accident that tears her life apart - almost literally.
Before the movie buzz, Gayle
Forman's Young Adult novel was already a critically acclaimed bestseller, translated
into dozens of languages and distributed across bookstores worldwide.
With a sequel (Where She Went), a movie adaptation and
the buzz that's been around for many months, we felt it was high time those of
us behind the curve on the phenomenon caught up. And what better way to catch
up than in a read-a-long?
(Okay, we'll admit it: we hear If I Stay will make us weep, and we're
nowhere near emotionally mature enough to handle it without a support system
which a read-a-long is sure to provide.)
So, the two of we have teamed up
with a close friend and a few newcomers and organized the event in the
Goodreads Book-A-Thon group. The read-a-long will last until the end of November,
and the novel has been divided into smaller sections, with separate threads
assigned to each of those sections. So if you, too, feel like (re)reading Mia's
story with us, feel free to join us over at Book-A-Thon and participate in the
read-a-long. Everyone is welcome to read at their own pace and every opinion is
valuable and entirely too welcome.
Just listen, Adam says with a voice that sounds like
shrapnel.
I open my eyes wide now.
I sit up as much as I can.
And I listen.
Stay, he says.
Choices.
Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first
love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and
friends behind?
Then one February
morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything
changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it's the only one
that matters.
If I Stay is a
heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of
family, and the choices we all make.
